Whether you need a passport for a domestic flight depends on the country you're flying in and the type of ID you have. In many countries, a national ID card is sufficient, while others require specific government-issued photo identification.
United States
For US domestic flights, you do NOT need a passport. Accepted forms of ID include:
- REAL ID-compliant driver's license or state ID (required from May 2025 onwards)
- US passport or passport card
- DHS trusted traveler card (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI)
- US military ID
- Permanent resident card
Important REAL ID update for 2026: As of May 7, 2025, all US travelers 18+ need a REAL ID-compliant license (marked with a star) or an alternative acceptable ID like a passport to board domestic flights. If your license doesn't have the star marking, bring your passport as backup.
European Union / Schengen Area
Within the Schengen Area (most of mainland Europe), a national ID card is sufficient for flights between member states. You don't need a passport for intra-Schengen travel, though carrying one is recommended. Airlines may accept expired national ID cards in some EU countries.
Other Countries
- UK: No ID is legally required for domestic flights, but airlines may require photo ID for check-in
- Australia: Government-issued photo ID required (driver's license is fine)
- India: Aadhaar card, voter ID, driving license, or passport accepted
- Indonesia: KTP (national ID) for domestic flights
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I show up to a domestic US flight without REAL ID?
TSA may still allow you to fly after additional identity verification procedures, but this is not guaranteed and can significantly delay your screening process. It's safest to carry REAL ID or a passport.
Can I use an expired passport for domestic flights?
In the US, TSA accepts recently expired passports for domestic travel. However, policies can change, so carrying a valid ID is always recommended.
Do children need ID for domestic flights?
In the US, children under 18 do not need ID for domestic flights. They should be accompanied by an adult with valid ID. Some countries require birth certificates for children under a certain age.
